Sam Hardister, Jr.
1927 - 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we remember Sam Gray Hardister, Jr., who graced this world with his presence from July 16, 1927, until December 26, 2024.
Born in the serene surroundings of Iredell County, NC, to Sam Gray Hardister, Sr. and Nellie Gray Hillard-Hardister, Sam was a cherished member of the Winston- Salem community.
Sam’s early years were greatly influenced by his passion for sports. He excelled at Hanes High School, graduating in 1946. His dedication and talent were evident as he participated in all three major sports and earned letters in each.
Though he faced the sorrow of losing his siblings—Gaye Hanson, Bill Hardister, and Peggy Bradford—and his grandson-in-law Jeremy Angel just before his passing, Sam remained a pillar of strength and resilience. He shared cherished memories with his brother Bill while working as the lifeguard for the iconic Crystal Lake, an experience that bonded them deeply.
Sam’s love story with his high school sweetheart, Dorothy “Dot” Lou Kates, began during those formative years. Together, they built a family filled with laughter and love, welcoming three sons into their lives: Sam III, whose memory continued to bring him joy despite his passing in 2015; Toby, and Steven. The loss of Dorothy, who left this world too soon, left a profound void in Sam’s heart.
Sam began his career at Hanes Hosiery in 1951, where he developed T-shirt patterns and excelled as a member of their basketball and softball teams. In 1959, he transitioned to RJR Archer Aluminum Company, where he made significant contributions as a maintenance mechanic, playing an essential role in establishing the new plant on Vargrave Street in Winston-Salem, NC.
A true community man, Sam found great joy in coaching baseball for the Southwest Little League Association, where he inspired young athletes. His unwavering faith was reflected in his lifelong commitment to Fairview Moravian Church, where he served as a Trustee, a Diener, and a dedicated member of “The Webber Class.”
Sam cherished the beauty of the outdoors, and every year, he looked forward to a weeklong fishing trip at the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his close friends. He would also embark on deep sea adventures with his boys, always smiling aboard the Captain Stacy fishing boat in Morehead City, NC.
In addition to his love for fishing, Sam had a passion for woodworking. He poured his heart into crafting small wooden sleighs, which he joyfully gifted to family members, spreading smiles and warmth during the holidays.
For many years, Sam was also a dedicated league bowler at Northside Bowling Lanes, where he competed proudly for the RJR Archer team, creating lasting friendships along the way.
Gardening was another beloved tradition for Sam. Since he and Dot purchased their first home in Winston-Salem, NC, in 1950, he meticulously tended to his garden each year. When they moved to Clemmons, NC, in 1966, he continued cultivating vegetables and flowers, nurturing beauty in their backyard that brought joy to their family.
The hat Sam is wearing in this photograph was a symbol of his pride as a grandfather. It represented the unforgettable moments he shared while watching his two grandsons, Adam Hardister and Josh Hardister, achieve an incredible milestone by winning State High School Football Championships for the first time—2009 for Northside High School in Roanoke, Virginia, and again in 2013. Those moments captured his unwavering love and support for his family.
Sam’s legacy will be lovingly carried on by his sons Toby (Rhonda) Hardister and Steven Hardister, daughter-in-law Pat Hardister, and his cherished grandchildren: Jennifer Angel, Amy Hardister, John (Kristle) Shaver, Adam (Kelsey) Hardister, Joshua (Hayley) Hardister, and Stephanie Hardister (Charles Goodwin) and sister-in-law Mary Hardister. He also leaves behind the joy of his several great-grandchildren, Phillip Angel, Hanna Angel, Callan Hardister, Graham Hardister, Molly “River” Shaver, Matthew Shaver, and Mason Shaver.
As we reflect on Sam’s remarkable life, we celebrate the warmth and kindness he shared with all who knew him. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for your support during this difficult time. They will be holding a memorial service at a later date, which will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sam’s memory to the Fairview Moravian Church 6550 Silas Creek Pkwy Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
