Rev. Dennis Allen Ammons

1946 - 2026

The Rev. Dennis Allen Ammons of Clemmons, NC, loving husband of Theresa (Terry) A. Ammons, has joined the Church Triumphant as of April 24, 2026.   Rev. Ammons is the son of the late Frank G. Ammons and R. Irene Ammons of Kernersville, NC, and formerly of the Bethel community of Waynesville, NC.  The Rev. Ammons is a retired pastor of the United Methodist Church.

Earlier in his life, after graduating from NC State University, Rev. Ammons served as an officer with the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and was decorated for valorous and meritorious service while serving in combat, receiving the Bronze Star.

Upon returning home from military service, Dennis began a career in the furniture industry and spent 35 years in a variety of roles with several major furniture companies. With knowledge and experience on the manufacturing side of the industry, he found working with furniture designers to develop marketable product most rewarding.

Later he attended Duke University in preparation for his calling to the ministry. In addition to his passion for preaching the Word of God, he enjoyed working for homeless advocacies, both civilian and ex-military.

Dennis was a creative learner, always ready to try something new and challenging. He obtained his private pilot’s license, was a competitive sailor, had a professional photography business, loved to hike, read extensively, and explored many avenues of history and ancestry. His grandsons helped him not only stay current but kept him on his toes with their deep and thoughtful questions. He was also quick witted and continued to make his wife laugh until the very end.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Terry, his daughter, Kelly Ammons, mother of his four grandsons, Maddox Gray, Declan Kiger, Jenner Kiger, and Beckett Kiger, his stepson, Ian Hiatt, and his stepdaughter, Taylor Key and her husband, David Key, and Nancy Ammons, grandmother of his grandsons.

If you would like to remember Dennis in a special way, eat your favorite ice cream, spend time with your grandchildren, have a glass of lemonade, watch a history show on YouTube, Howl Back, send a note, text, or make a call to someone just because, or raise a toast to a cherished friend.

Memorials may be made to the Clemmons United Methodist Church Music Program (3700 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012) and Watchmen of the Streets (110 Links Course Lane, Advance, NC 27006).

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 2:00 pm, at Clemmons United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the service.

The service will be live streamed and can be found at Watch Our Online Streamed Services — Clemmons United Methodist Church

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” -2 Timothy 4:7

What a wonderful person Dennis was. I spent many, many nights at their house during highschool, many vacations, and a lot of time talking and learning from him over the years of friendship with Taylor. Dennis and Terry were like a second family. Praying for the entire Ammons family, as the impact Dennis had on so many will surely be felt.

Dennis was my second cousin – on the Cole descendant side. His grandmother, my Aunt Emma, was one of my favorite memories as a child when my dad took us to Bethel to visit his sister. Dennis’s parents, Irene and Frank, were my encouragers when I came to Haywood County to work as a new Registered Nurse. Dennis, being a few years older, was in the background of my life but in our later years, and as both our parents passed on, Dennis and I corresponded from time to time. He became a great encourager to me, in the faith and as well as being family. I know his family will miss him and I will miss having him as a prayer warrior, friend, and cousin. May we meet on the other side one day and have all those chats we never finished. Family, my heart is heavy for your loss. I pray God’s comfort and peace surround you daily. Love and prayers, Jenny Cole Frady and husband, Bob Frady.

Dennis was a wonderful neighbor. It was an honor to know him and see him live out his faith in everyday life. I admired his ministry among those who were living along the margins of life and often unseen by others. I remember Dennis writing a beautiful prayer for our neighborhood, Cobblestone, which we included in the welcome bags for the neighborhood. As Dennis transitioned from this life to the next I hope he was able to see all the many kindnesses he did in life and the ripple effect it had in the world. Deepest sympathy to the family in your loss.

Being a member of a neighborhood Bible Study / Prayer group with Dennis, I always looked forward to the insight he had on many scripture. It was clear he was a person who studied God’s Word and often shared a story that related to our discussion. He had a love for helping homeless and homeless veterans working with others to provide food, clothes and of course God’s Love. Dennis will be missed.

Dennis was always a man of God, even before he made it official. We asked him to donate his time and photogrraphic talent for special olympics. He didnt hesitate a second spent hours with a smile on his face taking photos of people often forgotton. Through his photos they live on, through his work in so many venues he will also. May we all live a life that this great man inspired through his life, simply by being himself, not a ” preacher” a liver of a life who silently served others with love. He made a difference. His life mattered. His selfless life will continue to lead as those of us honored enough to have known him continue to live. Until we meet again, rest in the Saviors arms.

Dennis was such a great friend and neighbor. We still remember fondly our times playing cards with Dennis and Terri as well as the hiking club outings. We think of you both often, pretty much every time we get our mail across from your old house. Terri, we intended to be at the service, but we got the time down wrong. When we realized our mistake, we were able to watch the second half of the service online. What a beautiful tribute for a wonderful person and a true Christian gentleman. Our sincerest condolences to you and your whole family.
