Nancy McArthur Hayes
June 22, 1947 – October 23, 2025
Nancy Marlene McArthur Hayes, 78, passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2025. She was born in 1947 in Durham, NC, to the late Floyd (“Mac”) and Elsie McArthur. She often shared fond childhood memories of family vacations and summers at her late uncle Glenn McArthur’s children’s camp, where she worked as a counselor and spent many hours riding horses. After graduating high school, she enlisted in the Army and served as a secretary at Fort Dix. When she returned home, she married her late husband, Stewart Hayes, and they moved to Winston-Salem, where she worked a variety of part-time and full-time jobs, including as a human resources specialist at Wake Forest University. Nancy’s passion, however, was being a loving mother to her two children, Eve Storoshenko and Mark Hayes, and a loving grandmother to Eve’s two sons, Dylan McArthur-Reed and Jordan Maxfield (and their many friends, including Michael Williams). Throughout her life, Nancy enjoyed the company of family and friends, and the kitchen table was always a place of laughter, conversation, and love. For many years, Nancy and her family were active members of the First Baptist Church (5th Street), and they later attended St. John’s Lutheran Church with Eve’s family, where Nancy volunteered in the church’s school library. She was a committed believer in Jesus Christ, and her faith brought countless blessings to her family and many others. She was a remarkably creative person and enjoyed various arts and crafts—as well as helping with school projects. She loved the beach, British murder mysteries, and a daily frosted coffee. Nancy will be deeply missed by her surviving family, which includes Dylan’s wife Haley and their two sons, Braxton and Beau. On November 1, the family will gather to celebrate Nancy’s life and receive friends from 1 to 3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of St. John’s Lutheran Church and School, 2415 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC.
