Katherine Rose Joyce Hodges

1945 - 2025

Katherine Rose Joyce Hodges, 80, of Winston-Salem, passed away, Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

A native of Forsyth County, Katherine was born on January 8, 1945, to the late Fred (Pop Joyce) and Dorothy (Mama Dot) Brown Joyce.

Graduated from RJ Reynolds High School in 1963 where she played flute in the marching band and orchestra.

Graduated from the N.C. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1966.

Her nursing career included positions in Labor and Delivery, Intensive Care Nursery, Hospice in its early years in Winston-Salem, and nurse case manager at Senior Services in Winston-Salem from which she retired in 2011.  She also taught medical-surgical and maternal-child health at the NCBH School of Nursing.

A member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, she was co-chair of the Altar Guild for over 25 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Adam Hodges and Timothy Hodges; brother, Fred Joyce, Jr.; and sister, Carolyn Joyce Whicker Cheek.

Katherine leaves behind her daughter-in-law, Bethany and grandchildren, Abigail and Will of Fairfield Township, Ohio; cousins from both the Joyce and Brown families including close cousin, John G. Spangler; nieces and nephews, Marilyn Whicker, Michelle Hamm, Marty Whicker and Michael Whicker.  Jay Hodges and brother-in-law Jim Hodges (Joann) of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

She was always grateful for her close friends and church family who all offered amazing support throughout her life.

In lieu of other memorials, Katherine requested that donations be sent to: The Children’s Home Society of NC, at 604 Meadow Street, Greensboro, NC 27405 or to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, ATTN: The Society of St. Joseph of Arimathea, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem, 27103.  The Society provides funds for cremation and burial at St. Timothy’s for children whose families cannot afford this rite or who are referred from local hospitals.

A service of Burial of the Dead will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church with burial in the churchyard on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 1:00 p.m.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Michael Day and Bonita Pitzer for their devoted care and friendship during Aunt Katherine’s final years.

Also special thanks to the incredible staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

    Jean was a dedicated mother, church member and friend. She was alway upbeat even with the many sad events in her life. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. May she go from strength to strength 🙏
