Janis Lorraine McCard
1956 - 2026
Janis Lorraine McCard, lovingly known as “Jan,” went to be with her Heavenly Father on
Monday, July 27, 2026. Jan was born on September 1, 1956, in Atlanta, Georgia, and lived a
life centered on faith, family, music, and service.
Raised in a close-knit Christian family, she grew up with a deep love for music, faith, and
family traditions that would remain central throughout her life. After her family moved to
Memphis, TN, during her teenage years, Janis excelled in music and choir, developing a gift
for singing that became one of her lifelong passions.
Janis was a devoted mother to her two children, Lori and Russell, whom she considered her
greatest blessings and proudest accomplishments. She dedicated many years to raising
her family, volunteering in her children’s schools, supporting their dreams, and creating a
home filled with love, encouragement, and laughter. Her role as a parent was one she
treasured above all others.
Throughout her career, Janis worked in customer service, administrative roles, and
eventually serving as a caregiver for Visiting Angels. A true people person, she was known
for her kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others through volunteer work with her
church and her community.
Jan loved singing, baking, traveling, and gathering with those she loved. In her own words,
she wished to be remembered as someone who “found a song in everything she did.” May
Janis, affectionately known as the “Song Bird,” continue singing with the angels and live on
in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
She leaves behind her partner, Donna Gail Shaw of Winston-Salem, NC; two children, Lori
P. Hull (Chris), Walkertown, NC, and Russell W. Palmer (Jessica), Westampton, NJ; four
grandchildren, Brianna Hull, Emily Hull, Winston Palmer, and Lincoln Palmer; one brother,
Scott E. McCard. She is preceded in death by her devoted parents, Roy E. McCard and
Clyde LaVerne McCard of Memphis, TN, whose love and guidance shaped the person she
became.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, August 16th, at Peace Haven Baptist
Church in Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends following the service.
Memorials may be made in her honor to Peace Haven Baptist Church, 3384 York Rd,
Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or Trellis Supportive Care at

Jan was a sweet and gifted woman and I truly enjoyed singing with her in the MCC Winston Salem choir.
Janis started as a client of mine giving her haircuts about 15 years ago. We became very close and ultimately friends. She had a heart of gold and a sense of humor and we would laugh alot. I have helped her during her most difficult times and she always appreciated it. She loved her family, her faith, her friends and of course her singing. She will truly be missed. May she Rest in Peace and I am glad she is no longer suffering and I know I will see her again someday.
