Elosia Katherine Lee Amick

1936 - 2026

Elosia Katherine Lee Amick, 90, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Born September 28, 1936, and raised in Coshocton, Ohio, Elosia also enjoyed working on her family’s farm in Warsaw, Ohio. A gifted student and a remarkably well-educated woman for her generation, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan College in 1958 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The Johns Hopkins University in 1961. For the last 60 years she called Winston-Salem home, where she was a wonderful wife, mother, neighbor, and friend to all.

In her youth, Elosia was a standout athlete, playing softball, basketball, volleyball, and field hockey. She remained a proud Ohio State Buckeyes fan for life!

Elosia had a strong work ethic and a career full of adventure! She began as a Registered Nurse in the operating room at Forsyth Memorial and Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where she served for many years. She then followed her passion for food and hospitality, becoming a highly talented restaurateur. From 1973 to 1976 she created, owned, and operated The Amickability Inn in downtown Winston-Salem, and longtime patrons still recall how delicious and unique its food was. Cooking and entertaining were joys she carried home as well, where she loved to host friends and colleagues. Later in life, she achieved her goal of becoming a Regional Vice President for a division of A.L. Williams Insurance.

Above all, Elosia cherished the fellowship of her Christian community, and sharing her faith with those around her was the greatest passion of her life. A longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, she treasured Bible study and worship alongside her church family. She had a deep desire to help others in need of guidance, support, or knowledge that could enrich their lives, and she gave generously to those in need, even in the years when raising her children as a single mother was challenging. She also loved reading, traveling, sports, time with family and friends, and, of course, a gourmet meal. Her life was truly a blessing for us all!

Elosia was preceded in death by her parents, James Lee and Bertha Cullison Lee; her brothers, Leon Lee, Edward Lee, and Edwin Lee; and her adopted brother, Bernie Dunmire.

She is survived by her daughter, Renee A. Mathis, and husband, Scott, of Sugar Mountain; her son, Richard Amick, of Winston-Salem; her granddaughter, Megan Mathis, of Greensboro; and several nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

In keeping with her wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Country Club Road Winston-Salem, NC.
