Betty Jane Ray Eaton
1938 - 2026
Betty Jane Ray Eaton of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the age of 88. She is now enjoying a heavenly reunion with her parents, Carl and Calla Ray; her brothers, Donnie Ray and Toodle Ray; sister Dot Ray Eaton; and her beloved husband, Bill.
Betty and Bill married in 1959, and Betty began her career at Virginia Tech, where she worked for 40 years before retiring. Together, Betty and Bill were active members of Pembroke United Methodist Church and were lifelong, devoted Hokie fans. They especially enjoyed following Virginia Tech sports and traveling together.
Over the years, Betty and Bill treasured the time they spent visiting their children and grandchildren in both Illinois and North Carolina. They remained deeply involved in their family’s lives, attending concerts, sporting events, birthdays, holidays and graduations, and many other meaningful milestones.
Betty leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Zimmerman (David); her son, Kent Eaton (Janet); her grandchildren, Drew Zimmerman, Jake Zimmerman, Matthew Eaton (Ashley), and Marissa Inscore (Greyson); and her own beloved Batman, great-grandson Lucas Inscore. In addition, she is survived by several in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as lifelong friends from her old Blacksburg neighborhood, including Bob and Glenna Timberlake, Glenn and Nelda Buss, and Bill and Diann Conlin.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Clemmons Village II, where Betty spent her final years. Their warmth, compassion, and loving care meant so much to her, and she came to think of them as family. The family also extends sincere thanks to Trellis Supportive Care for helping provide Betty with a peaceful passing.
In accordance with Betty’s wishes, the family will hold a private memorial at a future date.
Lynn and I were saddened to hear of Betty Jane’s passing. We have such fond memories of all the Chicago visits for sporting events, holidays and family visits. Bill and Betty were spectacular grandparents and marvelous friends these past few decades….memories of their friendship will always be treasured. Rest in peace Betty Jane.
