Reverend Elwyn Joseph Mackov
1940 - 2026
The Reverend Elwyn Joseph Mackov, lovingly referred to as Joe or Grandpa Joe, 85, of Rural Hall, North Carolina, passed away on January 15, 2026.
Joe is survived by his wife, Janette Mackov; his daughters, Elizabeth Day (Tom) of High Point, NC, Patricia VanSickle (Scott) of El Dorado, AR; his cherished grandchildren, Ashlyn Day, Carson Day, Abigail VanSickle, and Claire VanSickle; his step sons Shane Ellis (Delma), William Crews III (Teresa); and step grandchildren, William Crews III, Mary Benner (Gary), Casey Ellis, and Shane Ellis Jr.; and many step great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother.
Born July 13, 1940, at St. John’s Hospital in Brooklyn, Joe was the son of Reverend Joseph M. Mackov and Emma Harpas Mackov. He discovered his faith early as a choir boy at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine before attending St. Paul’s School and Lansford High School. Joe continued his studies at Moravian College and General Theological Seminary and was ordained in 19Re68 by Bishop Sherman. His ministry as an Episcopal priest took him to parishes in Queens, Long Island, Washington, D.C., and later eleven churches across West Virginia.
Joe’s life was defined by his deep love of family, faith, and his dog, Bunny. He found great joy in cooking, telling jokes, going for long drives and strolls, and finding beauty in the little things, such as picking wildflowers. Joe was always intrigued by old cars and delighted in sharing the word of the Lord. He never missed an opportunity to tell you his favorite recipes and places to visit. He was always quick to brighten any room that he entered and was known for his wit, patience and charisma.
Joe’s family wishes to extend gratitude to his many healthcare providers over the past three years; and most recently, the staff at Trellis Supportive Care, who led him with comfort and peace in his final days. We will miss him dearly, but have solace in knowing that we will see him again. Our greatest appreciation for all love, prayers, and support.
Please join the family at 11 am on Monday, January 19th, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church for a memorial service. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
Address: 303 Eastchester Dr, High Point, NC 27262
In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate monetarily or physically (i.e. baked goods, coffee, snacks) to the families supporting their loved one in their final days at Trellis Supportive Care in Winston Salem or to your cancer foundation of choice.
“I wonder as I wander out under the sky
That Jesus my Savior did come for to die
For poor on’ry people like you and like I
I wonder as I wander out under the sky”
I met Mr. Joe via FaceTime a few weeks ago. Had the privilege of praying with him and seeing his awesome smile. He loved Jesus and I know he is enjoying eternal life with our Lord and Saviour.
