Michael Glenn Shumate, Sr

1953 - 2025

Michael Glenn Shumate Sr., known by his friends as Toad, passed away peacefully at his home in
Lexington NC on March 10 2025 at the age of 71 surrounded by his children and their spouses.

Michael was born on August 20 1953 to Betty Cook Shumate and Travis Lee Shumate Sr. Oldest of his
four siblings Travis Lee Shumate, Timothy Odell Shumate, Johnny Ray Shumate and his sister who he’d
never forget Vickie Jane Shumate who died at birth. His parents and siblings preceded him in death. He
graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1971. Mike enlisted in the Army in 1971 during wartime
and was trained as a paratrooper. On his initial deployment to Vietnam, the war was ended and his
plane returned to the US. He proudly served this country from 1971-1973.

Michael spent his adult life driving a truck and loved being out on the open road and meeting new
people. He was very dedicated and loyal to his company, coworkers and especially his friends. Mike
retired from C.A.T. Inc. in 2024 after over 10 years.

Michael is survived by his children Tina (David) Beane and Michael (Mandy) Shumate, his grandchildren
Krislyn Turbyfill and Owen Turbyfill and his great grandchildren Anastasia LaRue and Grayson Johnston.
Mike’s family was extended through the ties of marriage and future marriage of his daughter, son, and
granddaughter that brought him grandsons Mike Beane and Dalton Johnston, granddaughter Haylee
Vaughn and great grandchildren Gavin, Audrey, Ava and Jameson whom he took to his heart and loved
as his own.

Michael was very generous and donated to many charities. To celebrate Mike’s giving nature the family
would ask that in lieu of flowers you please donate to one of Mike’s favorite charities Saint Jude, St.
Joseph’s Indian School, your local VFW or any charity of your choice.

A celebration of life dinner will be held on April 12 2025 2:00PM at Arcadia Community Center 1281

The family would like to thank Well Care Hospice of Davidson County and especially Mike’s nurses Chris
and Cassie for the care they showed Mike in his last weeks along with helping family understand and be
prepared for the process. They would also like to thank Affordable Cremations of Winston Salem for
making final arrangements as easy as possible. The family would also like to thank Mike’s cousin Brenda
Yokeley and all his friends that came to visit with him. The family gives a special thank you to Mike’s
neighbor Ashia Terrell for always checking in on him and helping when needed.
