Sara Ruth Smith Long

1927 - 2022

Sara Smith Long, 95 passed away November 22 at Arbor Acres Retirement Community where she resided. She was born August 17, 1927 to Charles Eli Smith and Jettie May Gough “Kate” Smith. Sara was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Rebecca Jane Smith Mellor and her husband Curtis Eugene Long, the love of her life for 59 years. Surviving is her God daughter Linda Lewallen Watts and her husband Dale and their children Chip Watts and Christy Watts Creson. Sara enjoyed playing golf with her husband and friends and bridge at their home in High Meadows Country Club in Roaring Gap,N.C.,Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida, and Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem. At her final home Arbor Acres Sara enjoyed spending time playing bridge, croquet , chair volleyball , and singing with the Sharps and Flats. Her favorite time was hosting the annual Pink and Blue golf tournament at High Meadows and her favorite honor was when she was one of eight winners across the country chosen to play golf with Arnold Palmer at his bay Hill resort in Florida by winning a contest with Ladies Home Journal. The contest was covered in the October 1977 issue. She was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and Sara and Curtis helped start and support the High Meadows Chapel a weekly chapel service for the golfers to worship before they went to play golf. Sara and Curtis were great contributors to their community including Arbor Acres where you can see “Girl with the Dove” statue, the Long Living room for families in Strickland Place. They also had a passion for Senior Services with an emphasis on Meals on Wheels where they were members of the Legacy Society. Sara continued with that charitable spirit by donating to The Person County Historical Society The Curtis E. Long Home in Roxboro in Curt’s memory where memoirs of his life are located. She also had a heart for Allegheny County , sick and under privileged children and Wounded Warriors. To continue with her wishes to help others in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Sara S. Long Charitable Foundation so her heart for giving will continue. A memorial service will be held Monday November 28, 2022 at Robinson Hall at Arbor Acres 1240 Arbor Rd. Winston-Salem, NC . Dr B. Dale Watts will officiate the memorial service honoring the life of Sara S. Long with a fellowship after the service. A private graveside will be held at Knollwood Baptist Cremation Garden. Thank you to Trellis Supportive Care , Arbor Acres health care providers and staff and especially Sinia Colon and Vonisha Hill for the compassionate care they gave Sara .
