Mark Steven Townsend

1963 - 2025

Mark Steven Townsend, 62, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Mark was born on August 10, 1963, in Saratoga Springs, New York, to Marlene and Jack Townsend. As a military child, he moved frequently with his father’s Navy career before the family settled in Connecticut. It was there that Mark met his wife, Joanie Townsend, and together they built a life centered on love, family and laughter. In 1992, they welcomed their daughter, Jenn Townsend, who was the pride and joy of Mark’s life.
Mark dedicated his career to public services, serving as a Correction Officer for the State of Connecticut and retiring from his work as a Juvenile Parole Officer at Long Lane for the State of Connecticut. He was deeply committed to helping others and serving his community.
After retirement, Mark and Joanie moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina, where he enjoyed warmer weather, riding his motorcycle, motor racing, NASCAR, gaming, and spending time with family. He was actively involved in the Sons of the American Revolution and supported local community events. Mark had a deep appreciation for music of all genres and loved attending concerts. He was a devoted animal lover who spoiled every pet lucky enough to call him their human.
Those who knew Mark will remember his soft-spoken demeanor, dry sense of humor, and perfectly timed one-liners delivered with a straight face. He loved good times and shenanigans, especially with his wife and brother-in-law, Joe Gattinella, often accompanied by a double shot of whiskey or bourbon and a beer chaser. His presence brought warmth, humor, and steadiness to those around him.
Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Jason Townsend. He is survived by his wife, Joanie Townsend; his daughter, Jenn Townsend, and son-in-law Matt Taylor; his parents, Marlene and Jack Townsend; his sister Jeanette Davis, her husband Don, and their children Kelsey Schatzel (Tanner) and Brendan Davis; his niece Alisha Conklin (Cody); his nephew Christopher Townsend; his sister-in-law Carla and brother-in-law Jim Neiswanger, and brother-in-law Joe Gattinella. Mark is also lovingly remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.
Thank you to all the nurses and doctors in Mark’s care in Pinehurst and especially Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for North Carolina and Connecticut at a date and time to be determined.

Mark was a friend and my partner at work in Connecticut. He was a caring and humble man who always wanted to do right by people and who asked for very little in return. He prioritized family and friendship over everything and will be missed dearly. He will be missed but always remembered. Mark was a good man.

My brother was many things — a son, a brother, a father, an uncle, and a friend. But to those of us who knew him best, he was also a presence: familiar, a check-in call that will now leave a void.

He carried his life with quiet strength. He showed up in the ways that mattered — through loyalty, humor, and moments of connection that now feel far too brief, yet endlessly meaningful. He loved his family, and that love was felt even when words were few.

As a brother, he was part of my earliest memories and my lifelong story. No matter how much time passed or how life changed, that bond remained. There is a particular kind of loss that comes with losing a sibling — the loss of someone who knew where you came from, who shared your history, and who held pieces of your past no one else ever could.

He leaves behind a family who loves him deeply and will carry him forward in stories, laughter, and remembrance. Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the time we had, for the memories we will always hold, and for the love that does not end here.

    RIP Big Bro

I remember Mark since he was a one year old. I’ve always know him to be a loving son, husband & father. Mark was a very quiet guy! I have been considered as part of the Townsend family & I am so very sad that this warm, loving person had to leave us. His being in a better place & not in pain should make me feel better but wish he’d been allowed a few more years here on earth with his friends & family. Praying those left behind & hope you will always remember him with laughter rather than tears!

    Love, Beth

I met Mark many years ago, in the camp days in CT… I believe I met him the night Joanie jumped off the table- in heels!
Years later, my husband Kim and I connected with Mark and Joanie at UNE to see a game that Jenn was coaching.
And in most recent years, getting together in February in NSB Florida. While Mark was always quiet, we all had a great time together!
While you rest in peace, Mark, we will be grateful to have had those good times with you!

Joanie. We were shocked and saddened by the news of Mark’s passing. Although God called him home at such an early age, know that he had a good life especially as husband and father to you and Jen. Remember all the good times that you shared together.
You are in our thoughts and prayers always.
