Hanes G. Carter
1945 - 2024
It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Hanes G. Carter, Sr., 78 of Winston-Salem. He passed away peacefully at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Forsyth County on January 23rd, 2024. Hanes was born on September 13th, 1945 in Winston-Salem and was preceded in death by his parents, Hanes S. and Faye Harrington Carter.
Hanes graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1963 before attending college at both NC State and Western Carolina. After college he went to work for Piedmont Airlines in March of 1966. He worked in both Winston-Salem (INT) and Greensboro (GSO), and then retired from US Airways in June of 2002.
Hanes was a loving and devoted husband, a caring and loving daddy/pop, and a proud grandpa who was born with the gift of gab. He was a Parrothead who loved sailing, was an avid hunter, loved flying and all things aviation, collected chess sets, enjoyed traveling, loved the beach, talking about the good ‘ol days at Piedmont, and eating good BBQ.
He was the best teacher and guide for his children. He taught them the art of organic gardening and how to can the results, to respect the land and ocean as well as the creatures that inhabit them, how to respect a gun and use it for the tool it is, how to read and research and to never let anyone limit your desire to learn more, to stand by your convictions, that music is food for the soul, and movie quotes can add a little spice to life.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki Burk Carter and his five children; The Honorable Danielle S. Carter (Bryan Miller), Hanes G. (Chip) Carter, Jr. (Tanya), Mark C. Deal (Kim), Jason L. Deal (Jillian), and Jennifer L. Grasso. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren.
