Fay Laura Clinefelter
1931 - 2024
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Fay Laura Clinefelter. She passed peacefully on July 8, 2024 at the Kate B Reynolds Hospice House in Winston Salem, NC. Fay is the oldest daughter of Hazel and William Clugston. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Glenn, of 54 years; her sister Lois Henry; and her nephew Scott Henry. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Ann Whaley; her children and their spouses, Lynda and Kevin Cox and Dan and Jeannie Clinefelter; her nephew and his family, Fred, Kim, and Anna Henry; and her nieces and their families, Cheryl Henry and Jacques and Will Dubecq; Lirija Lulgjuraj and Logan and Kallista Henry; and Paige, Mike, and Cameron Eager. She is survived by many nieces and nephews in Glenn’s family as well.
Fay graduated from high school at 17 years old and her first job was writing classified ads for the local newspaper. She then worked at the New Castle County Military Air Base and later at the Delaware Society for Crippled Children and Adults.
Fay met Glenn at a USO dance and they were married shortly before Glenn discharged from the Navy. Their first house was in Delaware just down the street from Fay’s parents and sisters. They moved several times for Glenn’s career living in Michigan (twice!), New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and finally settling in South Carolina. Fay took up golf, Glenn’s passion, to spend more time with him. They travelled extensively in the US and abroad and made life-long friends along the way. Fay’s special girlfriends, Karen, Joan, Gay, and Marilyn were always a comfort and support to her after she lost Glenn in 2010. Family vacations were spent at the shore, as hers were when she was young, where Fay stayed secure and dry on the beach because she never learned to swim!
Fay lived a long and well-loved life. She will be missed.
A memorial service will be held on August 8 at 10:30am at the family church, Peniel Methodist, at 115 E Market St, Newport, DE. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetary at 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
I did not have the chance to meet Faye until her later years, but got to know her vicariously through her daughter, Lynda. She was greatly loved and will be missed!
What a lovely lady! Fay and Glenn were frequent visitors to our home and Carlton and I to their home in Charlotte along with her daughter,Lynda and her husband Kevin. I remember the yearly disagreements she had with Glenn as to how to cook the turkey during the holidays. So funny. Same disagreement every year! She was a good one and will be missed

Aunt Fay was one of the most spirited people I ever met, and she brought high energy into anything she engaged in, whether it was a simple conversation with family, or helping her husband lead their very active lives. Whenever they were visiting back in Delaware, Aunt Fay was a pleasure to be around. She actively listened when she was with you – it made you feel validated that someone with such wide connections can make a moment together feel meaningful, even years later. When family is separated by time and distance, each interaction carries so much more importance. Aunt Fay’s great nephew, Logan Henry was lucky to have known her enough to recall some of those moments, and treasured the fact that she thought of him as well. Sadly, her great niece Kallista didn’t get to know Aunt Fay as she’s much younger, but she cherishes the connection this wonderful woman had with her recently-deceased father.
There is no replacement for any person in life, and Aunt Fay will be truly missed for the unique spot she had in our hearts.
