Earnest Leon Little

1945 - 2025

Earnest Leon Little, a proud veteran and beloved family member, passed away on June 5, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on March 5, 1945, in Lexington, North Carolina, Leon was next to the youngest of six siblings in a hardworking, musical family led by Mary Lou (Peck) Little and Samuel Merlin Little. He grew up alongside his sisters, Dorothy Little Pyrtle and Phyllis Little, and brothers, David Little, Doug Little (deceased), and Steve Little (deceased).

Leon dedicated 20 years of his life to military service. He served 10 years in the Army as a Military Policeman during the Vietnam War, where he was also jump-qualified. He then transitioned to the Navy, completing another 10 years as an Aircraft Mechanic, eventually retiring from service.

A quiet, sensitive, and tender-hearted man, Leon had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life. He loved the American Southwest, particularly Phoenix, Arizona, where his family resided for a period. He was passionate about horses, music, and working with his hands. He was also an avid reader and had been diligently working on writing his own book for many years. Growing up, he was more a listener than a talker and had fuel for the pages in a book.
Above all, his family was his greatest joy. He was present at every family gathering – listening, laughing and singing along.

In his later years, Leon faced significant health challenges. Despite his declining health, he maintained a spirit of gratitude, often expressing thanks to those who cared for him. He was fiercely independent, a trait that defined him throughout his life, and he held onto his dream of living in a camper on a piece of land in Sedona, AZ with a pond, where he could fish.

Leon is remembered for his love of family and country.

He was well-cared for in his final days at White Oak Manor in Charlotte, and his family takes comfort in knowing he died with dignity. His life serves as a reminder to make choices rooted in one’s values, to seek guidance, and to be thankful for every person and experience.

Leon is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Little Pyrtle and Phyllis Little, and his brother, David Little, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will cherish his memory. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Lou and Sam Little, and his brothers, Steve Little and Doug Little.
