Donald Ray Hare

1935 - 2025

Donald Ray Hare, age 89, of Kernersville, NC, formerly of Bluefield, WV passed away on Friday, June 27th, 2025 at a hospital in Winston Salem, NC following a recent stroke.

Born July 17, 1935, Don was the son of the late John W. and Lena R. Hare. Don dedicated his life to service, both in uniform and in his beloved community. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. His sense of duty, courage and commitment to justice continued long after his military career as he served the people of Mercer County, WV as both Magistrate for 8 years and Sheriff for 8 years.

Following his retirement, Don and Arline moved to Polk City, Florida prior to moving back to North Carolina. Following Arline’s death, Don spent time in Tennessee, West Virginia and North Carolina.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Lorna Arline Hare and his six siblings, Emmitt, Charles, J.E., Jerry, Pauline, and infant sister Mary Ann.

He is survived by his two sons, Keith (Mary Ann) Hare of Culloden, WV and Steve (Cathy) Hare of Kernersville, NC. He leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Chris (Mary) Hare, Lauren (Adam) Prim, Michael (Amanda) Hare, Matt (Casey) Hare, Joseph (Mikayla) Hare, Kayann (Trae) Smith and Daniel Hare along with 13 great grandchildren, Ava Prim, Patrick Hare, Ami Hare, Hunter Prim, Addie Hare, Kaylee Hare, Abi Prim, Hudson Hare, Maddie Hare, Lincoln Smith, Charlotte Smith, Benson Smith and baby Hare due in November, sisters-in-law Jodi Hare and Becky Hedrick, several nieces and nephews and a community that will miss his presence, especially friends at Arbor Ridge Independent Living Facility where Don spent his final years.

Don was an active member of the Linville Forest Church of Christ in Kernersville. Per Don’s wishes, there will be no service. He will be interred at the Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
