William Calvin Berry Jr.

1949 - 2025

William Calvin Berry Jr., 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away on July 15, 2025. He was the eldest of six children born to the late William C. Berry Sr. and Lucille Gary Berry, on August 20, 1949.

A gifted and self-taught musician, William discovered his love for music early in life, learning to play the piano on an old instrument in the family basement. He went on to master the bass tuba, trumpet, guitar, and double bass. A 1967 graduate of the original Atkins High School, some of the most joyful years of his life were spent playing in the marching bands at Anderson and Atkins High Schools and Winston-Salem State University, where he was also an active member of the concert and jazz bands.

William was also a talented carpenter by trade. He found great satisfaction in building and renovating homes, constructing decks, fences, and other structures with care and craftsmanship. His work is a reflection of his dedication, skill, and love for creating something lasting and meaningful.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lucille Berry; paternal grandparents, James John Berry and Lizzie Gregg Berry; and maternal grandparents, Rev. Arthur Gary and Della Johnson Gary.

He is survived by sisters Sylvia B. Gwyn, Patricia B. Stover, and Irma Berry-Scott; brothers James A. (Gail) Berry and Marshall E. Berry; nephews Carlos Frazier (Concord, NC), James O. (Sarita) Berry, Stephen Scott, and John Cain (Winston-Salem, NC); nieces Tiffany D. Walker (Durham, NC), Jasmine L. Stover (Silver Spring, MD), and Sharon Nyerere (Winston-Salem, NC); Aunt, Betty M. Berry (Winston-Salem, NC) as well as a host of cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and many other loving family members and friends.
