Richard Leggett Singletary
1953 - 2026
Richard Leggett Singletary was born on December 8, 1953, in Jackson, Mississippi, to William Albert Singletary and Iris Leggett Singletary. The oldest of three sons, Richard grew up alongside his younger brothers, John and Joe.
Richard graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1972. A talented basketball player, he went on to attend Pfeiffer College on a basketball scholarship, where he earned his associate degree before beginning what would become a more than 40-year career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
Richard was a dedicated and hardworking man. Much of his career was spent working third shift, providing for his family while most of the world slept. His more than four decades with Reynolds reflected the strong work ethic and dedication that were an important part of his life.
Later in life, Richard enjoyed playing golf, spending time at the beach, and relaxing by the pool. He was a lifetime member of Brookcliffe Pool, a place that became part of many memories shared with family and friends. Trips to the coast were especially meaningful to him, particularly the annual Wake Boys beach trip, a longtime tradition filled with friendship, laughter, and memories made over the years.
Richard is survived by his loving partner of more than 25 years, Lorrie Mayo; his children, Jennifer Matthews (Patrick) and Brian Singletary (Katie); Lorrie’s son, Michael, who also held a special place in Richard’s life; his four grandchildren, Morgan, Corey, Meredith, and Justin; his brothers, John Singletary (Sheila) and Joe Singletary; as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Albert Singletary and Iris Leggett Singletary.
In accordance with Richard’s wishes, he will be cremated, and no traditional funeral service will be held. His family is considering a celebration of life at Brookcliffe Pool, a place that was a meaningful part of Richard’s life for many years. Details will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
Richard’s legacy will live on through his family, the friendships he made, and the many memories created over a lifetime. From family vacations and childhood adventures to rounds of golf, days by the pool, and beach trips with friends, those moments became stories that will continue to be told and remembered.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
You were a brother by another mother and a best friend. Vacation trips and poolside days will never be the same. Your generosity towards everyone, and your genuine friendship with so many makes you a person whose smile and laughter will never be forgotten.
You were one of a kind and a very special, long-time friend. You always brought people together with your outgoing personality and generous ways. You always saw the glass as half full and were a positive influence on so many. You will be so very missed, but thanks for leaving us with so many wonderful memories. We were so blessed to have you in our lives and will always hold you close to our hearts.💕
Richard was a long time, special, close, good friend. I cherished our friendship. For years he helped with the food pickup for the King Outreach Ministry. But most important of all is that he believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior! Till we meet again my good friend. Titus 2:13

I will always remember Richard with the biggest laugh that thundered over a group of friends. He always saw the sunny side of every situation and inspired gratitude wherever he went. He was a giant of a man with the soul of a butterfly.
Dad, I will miss you more than words can say. I am so thankful for the time we had together and especially for the conversations we shared near the end. I got the chance to tell you that you were a great Dad, that I was proud of you, and how much I appreciated everything you did for me. Hearing you tell me I was a good son is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I love you, Dad. Until we see each other again in Heaven.
