Bobby Gray Smith, Jr.

1954 - 2026

A loving husband and immensely proud grandfather, Bobby Gray Smith, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at home on February 28, 2026. Born February 15, 1954 to Gray Smith and Joanne Barnes, Bobby spent his entire life in the Winston-Salem area where he became a familiar and respected face at Bowman Gray racing. For many years, he owned, built, and sponsored race cars, carrying on a passion that began with his father. At the track, Bobby was more than a car owner; he was a mentor, encourager, and father figure to many who were fortunate enough to know him. Another of Bobby’s greatest passions was attending Wake Forest football games and tailgating with his son.

Above all else, Bobby will be remembered for his unforgettable sense of humor. The things he said — often spontaneous and perfectly timed — are still being repeated years later. He had a remarkable ability to ease tense moments with a well-placed joke. Yet behind that humor was a deeply kind and generous heart. Bobby quietly gave his time, his advice, and his steady support to anyone in need. “I will help you,” was a phrase so many heard from him — and he always meant it.

A graduate of Parkland High School, Bobby built a career in the trucking industry. In recent years, he also developed and managed his own business.

Bobby married the love of his life, Mary Beth, 51 years ago, beginning a partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering commitment. She survives him, along with his son, Shaun (Heather) Smith; his cherished grandchildren, Evelyn and Jax, who brought him endless joy; and his stepsister, Cheryl Jefferies.

Bobby’s laughter, generosity, and steady presence will be deeply missed, but the love he gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew him. A celebration of Bobby’s life will be held Sunday, March 15, at 2:00 at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street, Winston-Salem.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to www.bestfriends.org, an organization that saves sheltered animals.
