Gilbert H. Schumpert Jr.
1938 - 2025
Gilbert H. Schumpert Jr., Colonel (Retired, U.S. Army), city manager, public servant, and most importantly, a beloved husband and father, died on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the age of 86. He was born on September 20, 1938, in Grandfield, Oklahoma.
On January 22, 1966, he married Judy and together they built a life that lasted nearly 60 years.
Gilbert began his military service in May 1960 and went on to serve with honor in the United States Army for more than thirty years, retiring at the rank of Colonel in 1991. While serving in the Army Reserves, he also stepped into city government, becoming City Manager in Woodward, Oklahoma and later in Shawnee. After his time in Shawnee, he made the decision to return to active duty. After completing his military career, he returned once again to public service, serving as City Manager in Lawton (1994–1998).
His educational path began at Cameron University, where he studied engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Math Education from Oklahoma State University, where he was named a Distinguished Military Graduate from Army ROTC. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma, growing in his understanding of leadership and city management.
Gilbert was a man of deep conviction. He could be stubborn—but that came from standing firm in what he believed was right. He didn’t shy away from hard decisions or back down when things got tough. He made choices he believed would lead to something better.
Of all the roles he held, the one he cherished most was being a husband and a father. He could talk to anyone—whether it was a neighbor over the fence, a city official, or a stranger in the checkout line. Wherever he went, his warmth and charisma followed.
In retirement, he enjoyed walking the dogs, time with family, and as many rounds of golf as possible—usually with a story, a little coaching, and a good bit of humor along the way. He stayed active and vocal, always ready to share his opinion—sometimes with passion, and often with a grin.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Schumpert; his daughter, Rev. Tracy Schumpert; his son, Scott Schumpert; and his daughter-in-law, Amanda Schumpert, along with many relatives and friends who were impacted by his life, his voice, and his presence.
