Brenda Kay Sands

1955 - 2025

Brenda Kay Duggins Sands, born November 5, 1955, passed away peacefully April 4, 2025, with her girls holding her hands on a beautiful warm, sunny afternoon that she would have loved.

A celebration of Brenda’s life will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, April 12, 2025, in the Family Life Center at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown, NC.

The family will receive guests prior to the service from 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM. In accordance with Brenda’s wishes, the family requests that those in attendance wear bright colors to help celebrate her life.

Brenda was a dedicated member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, actively serving on the Staff Parish Committee, participating in the Discipleship Bible Study, the Seekers Sunday School Class, and enjoying fellowship with the J.O.Y. Senior Group. Brenda’s service to others extended into her community, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Backpack Beginnings, the Kernersville Veterans Administration, and her church’s annual community Thanksgiving dinner.

After a successful career in the insurance industry, Brenda spent her retirement years enjoying her grandkids’ soccer games, taking trips to the beach and her brother’s lake house on Lake Gaston, gardening, bird watching, and thrifting. She also enjoyed walking her yorkie pup, Chevy, and spending time with her grand dogs, Lucy and Lennon. In her quintessential style, Brenda loved a sweet treat, summertime, parades, fireworks, and a cold sweet tea with plenty of lemon.

Brenda will be remembered for her warm hugs, boundless love, unwavering kindness, and the joy she brought to those around her with a big grin and infectious laughter.

She is survived by her two daughters, Julie Sands Cottingham (Michael) and Katie Sands Winfrey (Lee). She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Asher and Violet, who adored her as their “Gaga Grams.” She is survived by a sister, Toni Windisch (Bill) and a brother, John Duggins (Vicki). She also leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and her dear former mother-in-law, Lucille Sands, for whom Brenda provided devoted caregiving in recent years.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Duggins, and her former husband, Randy Sands.

Flowers may be sent directly to Morris Chapel United Methodist Church. Monetary donations can be made to the church’s general fund, or to organizations advancing pancreatic cancer research.

I didn’t get the opportunity to meet Brenda, but I did experience her joy through the eyes of Katie and Lee. I volunteer in the Media Center with Katie and we talked family all of the time. I saw the passion and support for Brenda. There wasn’t a day that went by while speaking with Katie that Brenda wasn’t spoken of. I felt as a part of the family through Katie and Lee.
Rest well in eternal life, love, and respect.

I knew Brenda for a short period of time, and what a blessing. Since I was Katie’s personal trainer, Katie paid for her mother’s sessions and Brenda worked diligently every session. She was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known. She was truly loved and will be sorely missed.🙏🏾
