Bettie Lee Holt
1928 - 2025
Bettie Lee Holt nee Young died on January 27, 2025, at the age of 96. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie; son, Don (Liz), and grandchildren, Rachel and Benjamin. Born in Richmond, Virginia to William David Young, Sr and Sarah Elizabeth Cooper Young, Bettie was preceded in death by her brother, William David Young, Jr. (Sonny), and her husband, Emmett Cecil Holt. Bettie moved to Winston-Salem in her late teens, where she resided until 2020, when she moved to Durham to live with Don and Liz. In Durham, Bettie was entertained by the house cats and dog and received excellent care from her two long-term health aides, Verne and Suzanne. Bettie was proud of her secretarial work with McLean Trucking Company and at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine but was most proud of running her own florist business. Bettie supplied the flowers for Don and Liz’s wedding, and weddings were her specialty. She was a devoted member of Ardmore Baptist Church since 1958. Bettie also loved to fish and garden. Her largest catch was a sand shark at Topsail Island, which she insisted on showing everyone before releasing it. There will be a graveside remembrance for Bettie on March 8, 2025 at Forsyth Memorial Cemetery at 11 AM, where she will be laid to rest beside her late husband, E. Cecil Holt. She was much loved and will be deeply missed.
We remember Bettie from many years past! We joined Ardmore in 1968 when Cecil was Scout master. In order for our oldest child to get into cub scouts I had to be willing to be a cub scout leader and actually started a group who met in our basement. Bettie was in the ladies circle that I joined and when she opened her
florist I ordered flowers from her. As usually happens in life kids grow older and my starting a full time job our paths did not cross as often. Our last visit with Betty was at the nursing home in Clemmon’s, and we were glad when Don was able to move her to his home. We knew she would have better care than she was
getting. So thank you and your wife Don for the love and support you provided for her.
