A. Scott Nelson

1954 - 2024

A. Scott Nelson peacefully passed away, Thursday, December 5, 2024, surrounded by his family at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Born December 14, 1954, in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of the late Donald E. and Mary Anne Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Luanne Lindsey Nelson, whom he married on April 23, 1988. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his brother, Steve Nelson (Faye) of Seymour, TN; sister, Dean Nelson (David) of Sunset Beach, NC; father-in-law, Willie Lindsey of Muscle Shoals, AL; and sister-in-law, Rose Lindsey of Huntsville, AL.

He is a graduate of Bowling Green University and Wake Forest University School of Business, where he completed his MBA.

Scott was a lifelong athlete, a collegiate distance swimmer, 10K and marathon runner, and his favorite, cycling. He was passionate about helping others. Scott fulfilled that calling over the years, becoming a beloved figure within the cycling community as the ride director for Blood Sweat and Gears. He expanded the organization’s philanthropic goals during his tenure, creating events like the Beech Mountain Metric and the Blowing Rock Classic rides, and played a pivotal role in the expansion and growth of the Winter Warmer Project. Through Scott’s efforts over the years, nonprofits throughout the High Country received critical financial support and more. Scott’s legacy will live on through the events and organizations he championed, and his commitment to others less fortunate will never be forgotten.

His other lifetime passion was guitars. He fell in love with the sounds of the 60’s and 70’s, playing everything he heard by ear. Joe Walsh, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young were among his favorite artists.

There will be a celebration of Scott’s life held in Alabama and in the High Country at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Scott’s memory may be honored by making a monetary donation or by volunteering at a local nonprofit.

Scott was an amazing man that will be so missed. He touched so many lives during his time here with us. Scott always had a sly smile on his face and enjoyed making people laugh. He was truly brilliant and used his talents to help so many in his own way. For those of us that knew him and loved him , our worlds will not be the same. We were all better having known him. Scott pushed for excellence and tried to help others do the same. Prayers for Lu and his family… you are always in thoughts.

I worked with Scott during the first 20+ years of BSG. Scott was involved with this cycling event from the onset in 1999. During his tenure as ride director he worked tirelessly to ensure this annual event was one of the best cycling experiences in the region. I spent many miles on my bike riding with him and in various events he was always willing to set the pace at the front. I will always remember his attention to details that made BSG, The Blowing Rock Classic and the Beech Mountain Metric some of the best events in which I participated. Rest In Peace my friend.

My sympathy and prayers for Scott’s family. We graduated together from Coshocton High School in 1972 and lived as neighbors during those years. Little did I know he lived ‘just up the road’ in Mooresville. Rest in peace Scott. Keep cycling among the heavenly clouds.
