Thomas Macon Womble, Jr.

1933 - 2024

Thomas Macon Womble, Jr.

Tom was born December 26, 1933, in New York City and peacefully passed on March 4, 2024 at the
age of 90 in Winston-Salem NC.
He is predeceased by his parents, Thomas Macon Womble and Rhoda Morris Womble, his sister
Barbara Womble Groat, and brother-in-law Richard Morrow Groat.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Iris Merritt Womble, daughters Kathy Lynch
(Mark) and Karen Wallace, his grandsons Dillon and Riley Lynch, and loving nieces, nephews, and
cousins.
Tom’s father’s career took them overseas to Japan for his younger years. Upon their return to the
U.S., Tom attended elementary and high school in Wilmington, NC, and he graduated from NC State
University in 1956 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He met Iris on a blind date in college, and
they were married in 1957. Tom and Iris then made their home in Winston-Salem where he began
his career with R. J. Reynolds as an Industrial Engineer. After attaining his license as a NC
Professional Engineer, he worked as a Project Manager. Among his project responsibilities were the
Winston-Salem Dental and Healthcare buildings and the Tobaccoville Manufacturing Facility. Within
their first year in Winston-Salem, they also fell in love with the newly established Knollwood Baptist
Church.

As a charter member of Knollwood, Tom served as a deacon and was active in many areas including
the building, budget, and finance committees until his health prevented further active involvement.
Tom never met a stranger and was simply a very kind, funny, and calm human being. He left this
world the same way he lived – peacefully.
The family wishes to thank Sheila Rodman for her loving and attentive care in the home prior to
Tom's hospitalization as well as the staff at the Forsyth Hospital Stroke Center, Silas Creek
Rehabilitation, and Trellis Hospice for their exceptional care in his final weeks.

A service will be held on Sunday March 17 at 2pm in the sanctuary at Knollwood Baptist Church with
a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts be made to Knollwood Baptist Church for the
Memorial Fund, 330 Knollwood St, Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or online at
