Sadie Marie Smith Southern

Sadie Marie Smith Southern, 83, of Clemmons, passed away peacefully at her home, Saturday, March 5, 2022, with family by her side.
Sadie was born in Stokes County on June 18, 1938, to the late Herman Paul and Blanche (South- ern) Smith. During Sadie’s youth, her family relocated several times, which entailed her attendance at several schools: Walkertown, Southwest, and then Pine Hall High School where she graduated in 1957. In the early 70s, she attended and graduated with honors from Draughon Business School. In the mid-70s, she and Kevin, along with her mother and Sadie’s baby sister, Tammy, moved to Stanleyville. After Kevin and Tammy each married and moved away, Sadie tended to her mother’s declining health until her mother’s death. In 2008, Sadie moved for the last time to Clemmons to be closer to her son and his family. She moved into a brand-new townhome in Langdon Village where she resided until her death.
Sadie worked for Hanes Hosiery for 38 years, and in 2005 retired at age 67. She held several positions with the company with the latter being a sales associate in the Hanes Employee Store. She would always buy items in the store and freely give them to anyone who crossed her path. At Christmas, the whole family knew socks, underwear, and Hanes brand clothing were coming their way.
Sadie had 3 passions: the first was her faith. Sadie was a long-time member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, and then once moved to Clemmons, she moved her membership to Immanuel Baptist Church. She read her Bible every day and prayed for her family, friends, and those in need on a nightly basis. For 2 years, Covid prevented her from being present on Sunday morning wor- ship and she missed it dearly. The second passion was her love of family. As the second born of 8, she helped care for her younger siblings growing up. Once her son, Kevin, was born, he became the light of her life and the reason for her existence. Everything she did she did with him in mind and how it would benefit or affect him. Once her grandchildren entered the picture, she stepped right in to care for and nurture “her girls.” You did not want to wrong any of them and then be on the receiving side of her “grandmama bear.” She spent countless hours rocking her granddaughters in their infancy, later taking them on field trips, and never missed a recital or banquet for them. She enjoyed family get-togethers and was always the first to arrive. The third passion was her garden. Sadie was a plant whisperer and had not one, but two green thumbs. She could make anything grow and flourish. While living on Hanes Mill Road, traffic would slow just so they could take in the beauty of her flowers and would often yell out compliments from their cars when anyone was in the yard.
Sadie was a kind, giving, generous, loving, unselfish and gentle soul. She was a devoted friend, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be missed by all who knew her.
Sadie was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Lillie Westmoreland; her brother-in-law, Bobby Westmoreland; brothers, Roger Smith and Paul Smith; and granddaughter, Mary Gray Southern.
Left to cherish her memories are her beloved son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Laura (Butler) Southern; grandchildren: Sarah, Anna (Christopher), and Molly (Everette) Southern; great-granddaughter, Stella Johnson; brothers, Reverend Daniel (Jane) Smith and David Smith; sisters: Ann (Doug) Dalton and Tammy (Keith) Dezarn; nieces and nephews: Tabatha (Ken) Bowman, Amanda Dezarn, Deanna (Jason) Shreve, Danita (Greg) Groce, Daniel (Shawnna) Smith, Rebecca (Jay) Wills, Jonathan (Amanda) Smith, Tim (Michelle) Westmoreland; David (Morgan) Smith Jr.; Robyn (Mike) Ashby; and multiple great nieces and nephews.
Kevin and Laura would like to give thanks for the impeccable care Sadie received for 2 weeks at Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center from all staff but especially from RNs: Jody, Stephanie, Sheveena and Pina; CNAs, Matt, Luis, and Jaclyn; providers: Jill and Jennifer (forgive us for those we accidentally omitted). Also, to Trellis Supportive Care and Hospice of Davie for their as- sistance with transitioning Sadie to home and then to death after only 3 short days–nurses: Sandy, Erin, and Nancy; case worker, Shakayla; and chaplain, Patricia Greene. Special thanks to Sadie’s neighbors in Langdon Village for always having an eye out for her, bringing her food, and being such great friends, especially Kaye, Gail, Grace, Rose, Carol, Helen and Conchita.
A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church in Clemmons on Friday, March 11 at 4 p.m. with Pastor Daniel Smith officiating. This is a memorial to Sadie; therefore, Kevin and Laura ask that you bring your “Sadie” stories to share with all attending if so inclined. The family respectfully requests that masks be worn.
